Films

The film programming bookends the festival. With two iconic movies documenting Drag Kinging since the mid/late 90's. With 'Venus Boyz' opening the festival featuring the artistic director and founder of go drag! Bridge Markland. Closing the festival 'Man for a Day' with the protagonist Diane Torr who co directed go drag! in 2002. These two films have shown a generation of Drag Kings our history and culture. It's feminist roots subverting gender. As well as these two giants we have a selection of short film screenings; featuring recent films made during the pandemic from contemporary Drag Kings and gender subverters. With this film programming we see the development and change in drag culture.
The screenings of 'Venus Boyz' and 'Man for a Day' we especially dedicate to Drag King Pioneer Diane Torr 1948 - 2017 and 'Man for a Day' Film Director Katarina Peters 1958 - 2021, aswell as to Drag King Legend Dréd Gerestant 1971 - 2019, who are all sadly not with us anymore.

A FILM JOURNEY THROUGH A UNIVERSE OF FEMALE MASCULINITY.

A legendary Drag King Night in New York is the point of departure for an odyssey to transgendered worlds, where women become men - some for a night, others for their whole lives. What motivates them? What changes take place? What do they dream of? The drag kings of New York meet in clubs and change lustfully into their male alter egos, parodying them and exploring male eroticism and power strategies. In London we see women experiment with hormones to become new men and "cyborgs". Masculinity and transformation as performance, subversion or existential necessity. An intimate film about people who create intermediate sexual identities.

As the pandemic spread across the globe. Drag artists lost their source of income and their creative outlet of live performance. Many artists turned to video and live broadcasting to stay creative when asked to stay inside. We have selected a range of these works created in a difficult time to celebrate the art form and resilience of drag.

Performance artist/gender activist Diane Torr’s worldwide appearances and workshops are now legendary. For over thirty years, the main focus of this performance artist’s work has been an exploration of the theoretical, artistic as well as the practical aspects of gender identity. Director Katarina Peters’ documentary observes a Diane Torr workshop in Berlin in which a group of open-minded women from different backgrounds come together to discover the secrets of masculinity. What makes a man a man and a woman a woman? Precisely when and where is gender identity formatted? How much is nature and how much nurture? Each of Torr’s workshops represented an open-ended laboratory experiment in social behaviour in which the question is posed: is it possible to deliberately play out different roles and create a space in which to transgress both masculine and feminine characteristics?
